Lesson objective: To continue refining an idea for a CD cover
Lesson 1
Now that you have explored a variety of possibilities and picked your favourite idea to develop into your first final outcome, you should continue to explore this idea in order refine and improve it so that your first final CD cover is as good as it can possibly be.
The first step is to complete another photoshoot linked to your idea. By completing another photoshoot you can ensure that the photographs which you are working with (or from, if you are creating an outcome using a non digital media) are exactly as you wish them to be. This might mean taking similar photographs to the ones you originally took for this idea, or taking photographs which are different (depending on how you would like to refine your concept). I will be asking you to complete one more shoot after this one - those are the photographs that you will edit into your final outcome for this idea - so think of this as one final opportunity to try out any ideas which you might have and see how they look before you take your final set of photos.
They decided that they liked this idea but that for their final outcome, they needed their model(s) to look in different directions, so they completed a final outcome shoot to reflect this, and used these photographs (along with typography) to create their final piece.
Task 1: Green (grade 1/2) - Complete one shoot where you take 12 photographs. Amber (grade 3)- Take 15-20 photographs. Red (grades 4+) - Take as many photographs as you wish. Variety is key. Task 2: Upload your photos into a gallery on your Weebly site with the title 'idea 1 refinement shoot'.
Task 3: Annotate your photographs answering the following questions: - What did you do during the photo shoot? - How did you take your photos, what props/lighting did you use and why? - Did you create a mood/atmosphere through the facial expression/pose? How? - Which compositional guidelines did you use and why? - What are the strengths of your photos and why?
Lesson 2
This lesson you should refine your idea by using the photographs which you took during your last lesson to create a series of possible CD covers, all of which link to your idea and look different from each other because you have chosen to refine them in different ways.
You might choose to refine: - Your colour scheme - The media you have used - The textures included in your piece - The typography you have included - The background of your image - The scale of the different elements of your design (what happens when you make things larger/smaller) - The composition of your piece
The Assessment Objective help sheet for AO2 summarises what you should aim to create when refining your work:
Take a look at the examples below to help you, notice how there is clearly one overarching idea behind the work, but it has been experimented with and refined in a variety of different ways :
Green (grade 1/2) - An idea has been picked to be refined, but only one element of the design has been experimented with.
Amber (grade 3) - Your idea has been experimented with in a variety of different ways but all of your refinements look very similar and your work is slightly repetitive.
Red (grades 4+) - You have experimented with your design in lots of different ways, showing many options for all of the elements of your design. Your refinements are varied and all of your experimentations look different to each other. You are clearly picking the best parts of each experiment to take forward into your final design.
